THE SHEEP HAVE ARRIVED
The three pillars of Regenerative Organic Certification® are soil health, animal welfare, and social equity. This month at Ambar Estate, you can see two of these principles in action as we welcome a flock of sheep to the vineyard.
These 50 Shetland sheep, all moms and daughters, will graze one acre of our 20-acre estate for three to four days at a time, participating in a technique known as rotational grazing. To prevent conflicts with native wildlife, two livestock-guarding dogs, Max and Narena, remain in the vineyard with the flock. A tarped area and dog houses keep Max and Narena cozy while at Ambar.
Hosting grazing animals in the vineyard enhances the land’s fertility and biodiversity, significantly improving soil health and contributing a natural fertilizer to the vineyard. Additionally, their hooves help cultivate microflora in the soil, increasing its resilience to extreme temperatures. This holistic approach supports the long-term health of our vineyard ecosystem.
